Chapter Thirteen

Shoving him into a sleek black sports car, Ellie glanced around the garage. “Johnny is covering for a couple of hours, but then I have to get back.”

“Of course.” Nico loved the studious, serious way she did her job. “Is this your car?”

“No, it’s a rental I had delivered earlier. Something the Lamon Lady would drive, don’t you think?”

He studied her features while she drove a tad too fast through the garage.

A pert nose. Ivory skin that shimmered with a soft glow. Full lips. And those eyes—cobalt and luminous.

This had to be his Lamon Lady, his woman in red, his Ellie. He couldn’t see it any other way. Maybe today while they were alone, he could find out the truth.

“Are you kidnapping me?” he teased, the excitement of their escape staying with him.

She checked traffic and then spun out of the garage. “You asked for my help.”

“I did, but now I’m wondering if that was wise on my part. Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

The little car purred along I-35 and merged with I-30, heading northeast. Dallas sprawled behind them, vast and shining in tones of gray and silver.

The crisp February weather didn’t allow for putting the top down, but Nico was almost glad. It meant he was closed off in this go-cart of a vehicle with a woman who kept him guessing.

A woman who could shift gears as fast as her little car.

“Are you taking me to your lair?”

“I don’t have a lair.”

“Okay, your tower?”

“I don’t have a tower.”

“Where do you live?”

“None of your business.”

He laughed at that, and tried again. “Do you like your job?”

“I do, and I can’t afford to lose it,” she said, sincerity ringing in the tight space between them. “I have degrees in both business and criminal investigation, with security courses on the side. I’ve worked undercover before, but never in such an elegant manner.”

Nico wanted to ask her more, but he was afraid too many questions would break the delicate thread woven between them.

He wanted her to fill in the gaps for him. It was then he realized she was playing a very dangerous game—a game he’d forced on her.

If this woman was who he thought she was, it explained why she wouldn’t want this kind of exposure when she was trying to stay undercover. And what had he done? He’d dragged her right into the bright spotlight she’d tried to avoid.

People called him ruthless, but that was part of being in a competitive, cutthroat business. He couldn’t be ruthless about Ellie, though. His heart had gone soft the moment he’d met her. Both times.

If he were a drinking man, he could sure use a drink right now. The Ellie mystery was driving him nuts.

When she turned off the freeway, he saw the signs for the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. “What is this?”

“It’s like Central Park but in Dallas,” she explained. “People picnic here, go bike riding or fishing, and canoeing out on White Lake, outdoors things. There are turtles and birds of all kinds, even white pelicans.
